What does a logo trademark protect?

A logo trademark protects the specific visual representation shown in the trademark application. That means the graphic elements, their arrangement, and their overall impression. It gives the owner exclusive rights to use that visual design in connection with the registered goods or services and grounds to challenge uses of an identical or confusingly similar image.

It does not protect the name or words that appear alongside the logo unless those are also registered as a wordmark or combined mark. A business with only a logo registration has limited grounds to act against a competitor who uses the same name in a different visual style.
