Do I need to sell goods / services to obtain trademark rights?

No, selling goods or services is not a requirement for obtaining trademark rights in most jurisdictions. A bona fide intent to use the mark for commercial activities in the future is sufficient for registration.

One of the few prominent exceptions is the US, where applicants will be required to prove commercial use within a set timeframe after examination; however, commercial activity is not required at the time of filing.
