A trademark search is a review of existing registrations and pending applications to identify any identical or confusingly similar marks that could create conflicts for a new application.

A comprehensive search covers not just identical matches but also marks that are phonetically, visually, or conceptually similar, since all of these can form the basis of an objection or opposition. Searches are conducted in the IP office database of each country where registration is being considered.
