When a trademark is published for opposition, it means it has passed the examiner’s initial examination, and it’s now been made public and open to third-party challenges. During the opposition period, any party with a legitimate interest can file an opposition challenging the mark's registration, although this is typically the owner of an earlier similar trademark.

Publication for opposition is a mandatory step in the registration process in most jurisdictions. The length of the opposition window varies: 30 days in the US, two months in the UK, three months in the EU. If no opposition is filed, or if any opposition is resolved in the applicant's favor, the trademark proceeds to registration.
