Purchasing a registered trademark is a straightforward process. First, identify the owner through a relevant IP office database (trademark ownership is public record). Once you have the owner's details, contact them directly to inquire about purchasing the mark.

If you agree to a sale, the transfer will be formalized through a trademark assignment agreement. Both parties sign the document, which sets out the terms of the transfer. The assignment must then be recorded with the IP office to update the register and make the new ownership official.

Trademarks tied to active, functioning brands are rarely sold in isolation. More commonly, a trademark is transferred as part of a broader business acquisition. If you are approaching an owner unsolicited, expect that a mark with genuine commercial value will be priced accordingly.
