A specimen unacceptable refusal means the examiner has determined the submitted specimen is insufficient for one or more reasons. The office action will specify the grounds; common reasons include the specimen being a mockup or digitally altered image, the mark not being clearly visible or legible, the specimen not establishing a clear connection between the mark and the goods or services, or the specimen type being inappropriate for the class filed.

The response requires submitting a substitute specimen that addresses the specific deficiencies identified. Reading the examiner's reasoning carefully before selecting the substitute avoids submitting a replacement that falls to the same objection.
