Individual ownership is appropriate in specific circumstances. The most common is where a business is not yet incorporated, and trademark rights need to be secured immediately; the individual can file now and transfer ownership to the company later.

It is also appropriate where the individual deliberately wants to retain personal control over the mark, for example, a public figure licensing their name to a commercial partner while retaining ownership rights. This allows the individual to grant and withdraw licenses independently of any single business relationship.
