What is trademark watching?

Trademark watching (also called trademark monitoring) is the systematic tracking of trademark databases for new applications that could infringe on a registered mark. When a potentially conflicting application is identified, the trademark owner can file an opposition during the publication period to prevent the new mark from being registered.

The term "watching" reflects the core activity: keeping a regular eye on new filings in the relevant classes and jurisdictions, so the owner is in a position to act within the opposition window when a conflict appears.
