Why did my trademark application receive an office action?

An office action is issued when the examiner identifies an issue that prevents the application from proceeding to registration in its current form. The specific reason is set out in the office action itself.

Common reasons include: the mark is confusingly similar to an earlier registration, the mark is too descriptive of the goods or services, there are errors in the applicant's details, the specimen does not demonstrate genuine use in US commerce (for US applications), or the goods and services description uses terminology not recognized by the IP office.

Read the office action carefully; the examiner's reasoning and suggested actions are the most useful guide to what the response needs to address.
