You receive a translation requirement when your trademark application includes a word, phrase, or text in a foreign language. Without a proper English translation, the examiner cannot assess this mark, since the USPTO needs the translation to properly evaluate the mark's distinctiveness, potential descriptiveness, and any issues under Section 2(a).

The response requires submitting an accurate English translation of the foreign-language element. This is typically straightforward and carries no government fee. If the foreign word translates to something descriptive or problematic in English, the examiner may then raise a substantive issue based on the translated meaning.
