What countries are included in the Madrid System?

Over 130 countries currently participate in the Madrid System. The full, up-to-date list is published on WIPO's website and is subject to change as new countries accede to the system.

Major markets covered include the US, EU (as a single designation covering all 27 member states), UK, China, Japan, Australia, Canada, India, Brazil, Russia, South Korea, and most of continental Europe and Africa. A small number of countries are not members and require direct national filings.

Global Trends in Trademark Registration in 2022

In 2021, the IPO received a record 196,639 trade mark applications, a 43.5% increase from 2020 which was the previous record year for trade mark applications [1]. Both the number of applications and trade marks registered have been consistently rising since 2011. As the numbers continue to grow in 2022 we can observe a number of trends that continue to influence the world of IP rights.
