Can you add classes to an existing trademark?

No, classes cannot be added to an already filed or registered trademark application. The scope of protection is fixed at filing, except for the option to remove certain goods and services. Adding a class requires the mark to be examined for distinctiveness in that new class, and that’s why it constitutes a new application process instead of an amendment.

To obtain protection in additional classes, a new application covering those classes must be filed. It will be assessed independently and will carry a later priority date than the original registration.
