File as soon as the renewal window opens, which is typically six months before expiry in most jurisdictions, but up to 12 months in the US, Australia, and New Zealand.

Waiting doesn’t benefit you in any way, but adds a lot of risk. If renewal is missed, a six-month grace period applies in most jurisdictions, but late renewal usually carries additional fees and may impose procedural restrictions. The earlier the renewal is filed, the more straightforward the process.
