The examination period, during which the IP office reviews the application for formal requirements and registrability, varies significantly by jurisdiction. It typically takes between 1 and 10 months, though some countries take longer.

Some representative figures: the EUIPO typically completes examination within 1 month; the UKIPO takes around 3 months; the USPTO around 11 months; and Canada can take over a year at the examination stage alone.

Examination is only one stage in the process. After passing the examination, the application is published for opposition, which adds a further 2 to 3 months before registration can be confirmed.
