What is the Madrid System?

The Madrid System is the international trademark registration framework administered by WIPO. It allows trademark holders to file a single international application, based on a national or regional trademark, and designate protection in any of the 130+ member countries simultaneously.

A common misconception is that filing through the Madrid Protocol automatically gives you worldwide trademark coverage. It doesn’t. Each designated country continues to examine all applications under its own national rules and can grant or refuse protection independently. If accepted, the result is a bundle of national trademark rights managed centrally through WIPO under one registration number and one renewal process.
