What documents and other details are required before filing the trademark application with the USPTO?

A USPTO trademark application requires the following information:

  • Owner details: legal name and address (company name and registered address for a legal entity; personal name and address for an individual).
  • The mark: the exact text of a wordmark, or a clear image file for a figurative or combined mark.
  • Goods and services: a description organized by Nice Classification class, using terminology accepted by the USPTO's ID Manual.
  • Filing basis: use in commerce (with a specimen) or intent to use.
  • Specimen: required at filing for use-in-commerce applications; submitted later for intent-to-use applications.
  • Attorney details: required for foreign-domiciled applicants; a licensed US attorney must be appointed.
  • Filing fee: paid at the time of submission.
